Zara Tindall joins French sailing team during a practice ahead of Great Britain Sail Grand Prix

She’s known for her horse riding skills, but today Zara Tindall instead embraced sailing when joining a team set to take part in Great Britain’s Sail Grand Prix this weekend.

The Queen‘s granddaughter, 40, looked in great spirits as she joined France‘s group on the water during a practice session ahead of the high-octane sailing series.

The SailGP series, which is coming to Plymouth on 17-18 July, sees teams from Great Britain, New Zealand, France, United States, Japan and Australia compete each year for a $1million (£890,000) prize.

In her role as ambassador for sporting clothing brand Musto, mother-of-three Zara joined the team to try out the unique sailing experience.

SailGP, founded in October 2018, has been called the ‘Formula 1 of the sea’ because countries compete for the $1million prize at different events in San Francisco, New York, England, Sydney and Marseilles, France.

The eight competing nations – which also include Denmark and Spain – will race it out in identical fast foiling F50 catamarans reaching speeds exceeding 60mph.

This is the third event in the series’ global championship’s calendar, following opening events in Bermuda and Taranto, Italy.

The event is held in partnership with Plymouth City Council and with support from Associated British Ports, English Cities Fund and Sutton Harbour Group.

Zara’s outing comes after she competed for a second day in her first horse trials since giving birth to son Lucas four months ago.

The Queen’s eldest granddaughter rode back into action at the Barbury Castle Estate near Marlborough on Saturday as she gave a huge thumbs up while atop a grey Gelding called Classicals Euro Star.

The mother-of-three welcomed her first son with husband Mike Tindall, 42, in March in the bathroom of their Gatcombe Park estate in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Looking confident in a double-breasted navy jacket, a beaming Zara seemed happy to return to the sport she’s spent years competing at the highest level in, just two days after her first competition since her third child was born.

Princess Anne‘s daughter has been putting family first in the last year, looking after her two daughters Mia Grace, seven, and Lena Elizabeth, three, as well as newborn Lucas.
