Why is EastEnders cancelled tonight? When is the next episode on BBC?

EastEnders fans will unfortunately not be getting their Albert Square fix tonight as the BBC soap has been cancelled.

The Walford-based drama usually airs at 8pm on Friday evenings but not this week.

Phil Mitchell, Kat Slater and co will be noticeably absent from our screens due to the latest UEFA Euro 2020 game.

Friday night will see Belgium take on Italy in the second quarter-final game, which takes place at Fußball Arena München.

However, tonight’s episode has been available to watch on BBC iPlayer since Monday 28 June.

In fact, every Monday the entire week’s episodes have dropped on the streaming platform – meaning hardcore fans can binge the much-loved soap.

But it’s not just the football that’s forced BBC to drop a weekly batch of episodes, as it’s just been confirmed that fans will be able to continue to do so when the Olympics kick off later this month.

The delayed 2020 Games, which are being hosted in Japan, are due to start on July 23.

The BBC announced the move on social media today, saying: “We are so excited to announce that EastEnders will continue to box set episodes on BBC iPlayer, on Mondays until the end of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”

The statement continued: “All four episodes dropping weekly on Mondays until the end of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”

“By giving you the choice to watch the show on iPlayer or on broadcast TV, *you* are in control of when and where you visit Walford,” the message ended.

EastEnders boss Jon Sen said: “We’re so glad that the audience has enjoyed getting ahead of the game – keeping up with Albert Square on iPlayer whilst enjoying the Euros, so we’re carrying on releasing the week’s episodes on Monday throughout Tokyo 2020.”

He continued: “There’s enough happening in Walford this summer to keep everyone on the edge of their seats and we’re thrilled audiences won’t need to miss out on anything – starting with the match this Saturday!”

“So, settle down on the sofa, put your feet up, and get yourself ready for a splendid summer in The Square,” the executive producer added.

The next episode of EastEnders will air on BBC One on Monday 5 July at 8:05pm.
