Solskjaer casts doubt on Rashford’s potential shoulder surgery

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford may still not have surgery on the shoulder injury which is threatening to rule him out of the start of the season.

Rashford has been troubled with the issue for several months, and after his stint with England at Euro 2020 it was widely reported that he would undergo surgery which would keep him out for the first two months of the 2021/22 campaign.

Solskjaer says that hasn’t yet been decided though.

“We’re looking at the best option, he went away just to reflect on it a little bit and we have to take the best course of action for him and the club,” said the Norwegian after United’s 2-1 friendly win over Derby.

“We’re still addressing that with the experts.”

Solskjaer also spoke out about the racist abuse Rashford and England teammates received after missing their penalties in the Euros final loss to Italy.

Rashford has been suffering with the injury

“It’s very disappointing and sad,” he said.

“They play football, they do the best for the club, do the best for their family, do their best for their country and are brave enough to step up and take penalties, that’s a win in itself.”

Rashford is on his break after his Euro duties with England teammates but Solskjaer did give fans an update on a problem the star is having with his shoulder.

The boss added: “We’re looking at the best option, he went away just to reflect on it a little bit and we have to take the best course of action for him and the club.

“We’re still addressing that with the experts.”

Sancho is another star who is on his holiday but when he returns he will be lining up for United after agreeing a deal to move from Borussia Dortmund.

The signing hasn’t been officially announced by United and Solskjaer shed some light on the situation.

“From what I understand only paperwork, small little details, hopefully we can announce something [soon],” Solskjær said.

“Let’s get all the paperwork done and get him over the line and then I can say what I truly feel about the player.”

United dispatched of Derby 2-1 on Sunday afternoon and a stand-out player in the match was Jesse Lingard.

The star had a spell on loan at West Ham last season but the Norwegian manager said he is firmly in United’s future plans.

“Jesse has come back, been bright, he wants to fight for his place and there’s nothing better than seeing players want to fight for their place.

“What he did towards the end of last season [at West Ham]: that’s the true Jesse, that’s what we know he’s capable of and we saw towards the end that we lacked some options at times and Jesse is in the plans at the moment, yeah.

“The first game is always difficult, it’s the first test of 45 minutes, big pitch, took a bit of time to get going, loads of young players getting their chance to play with some of the first-team ones.

“Tom [Heaton] was very positive, he’s here to give the other ones a little bit of a challenge as well. He’s conducted himself so well throughout his career. I was just on the end of my career when he was coming up, so I’m so happy to have him.”
