Sol Campbell names Ben White transfer concern as Arsenal close in on deal

Former Arsenal hero Sol Campbell has named his major concern over the Gunners’ move for Brighton defender Ben White.

The England international was made the club’s top target of the summer transfer window, but it has been a drawn-out process for them to finally get their man.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been keen to bring in the 23-year-old, though he has been forced to wait for the central defender.

The Seagulls have knocked back two bids from their Premier League rivals so far, with Graham Potter’s men holding out for a fee of £50million.

With three years left on his contract at the AMEX Stadium, Brighton can virtually name their price for their star man.

It looks ever more likely that it will be a price that the Gunners will be paying, with Brighton reportedly having successfully held out for the full £50m.

Only the medical now stands in the way of White completing his move to the Gunners, with personal terms having already been agreed.

White will likely come in as the first-choice centre-back in Arteta’s squad, boosting a position group that secured one of the best defensive records in the top-flight last season.

If the deal is successful, White will become the third most expensive player in Arsenal ’s history, a stunning fact given he has only played 36 matches in the Premier League.

While he did impress for the Seagulls in those 36 appearances, it is still a figure that is leaving some feeling concerned that Arsenal could be overpaying.

One of those who is worried that White is facing extra pressure to be a success at his potential new club because of his fee is Campbell.

The former England international spent six years with the Gunners across two spells, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

White will cost £50m more than Campbell did, with the centre-back having moved on a free transfer from Tottenham.

And Campbell believes that price means that White must be a “master of his position” if the move is completed.

“He’s played 36 games for Brighton. Is it one for the future? He’s 23-years-old, definitely one for the future,” he told talkSPORT.

“I don’t think you can know too much about someone. In the sense that age wise, you know.

“He needs to work out because Arsenal are not in a position to shift out £50million for a player. He’ll definitely have to start if it does happen and the medical is all good and get going.

“It’s a difficult one, it’s a lot of money but in the years ahead, they see a future. They see someone who can come in and play midfielder, full-back.

“He needs to have a situation where at £50m he needs to be a master of his position and that’s what he has to be.”
