Man Utd transfer links to Di Lorenzo shot down by Italy Euro 2020 hero’s agent

With Manchester United’s long pursuit of Jadon Sancho finally coming to an end, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can now prioritise the other areas in which he needs to strengthen.

United have been persistently linked with right-backs this summer, despite signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £50m only two years ago.

While Wan-Bissaka has been widely praised for his defensive contribution, some have questioned whether he brings enough to the team going forwards.

He made notable improvements in that department with two goals and six assists last season so, while he’s not the most attacking full-back in the Premier League, that criticism isn’t entirely fair.

That said, Wan-Bissaka has relatively little competition for his starting spot. He made 54 appearances in total last season, all of which were starts.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo looks to get past Declan Rice during the Euro 2020 final

That meant that he was the most consistent starter in Europe’s top five leagues during the 2020-21 campaign. It would be understandable if Solskjaer wanted to give himself the option to rotate at right-back, even if Wan-Bissaka has proved himself to be a reliable custodian in defence.

Among the defenders who have been touted for a move to Old Trafford this summer is Giovanni Di Lorenzo. Having just won Euro 2020 with Italy, starting five out of seven games for the Azzurri , the Napoli right-back was always likely to be subject to transfer speculation.

Nonetheless, while Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has admitted that the club may have to cut costs this summer, Di Lorenzo’s agent has dismissed reports linking his client to United.

Speaking to Radio Marte , Mario Giuffredi said: “De Laurentiis spoke at the press conference explaining Napoli’s losses, that all his players are transferable and that, if appropriate offers arrive, he will evaluate them himself.

“If offers arrive, we are obliged to take them into consideration, also in the interest of Napoli, because it is the president himself who has put everyone on the market.

“So, we feel we are on the market. If an appropriate offer arrives it’ll be discussed and considered.

“But now it is newspaper talk. I read about Manchester United, but now it is newspaper talk.

“If there were real things, we would be the ones to communicate it to Napoli. At the moment no request has arrived.”

United have also been linked with Kieran Trippier and Norwich youngster Max Aarons. They have reportedly had their first bid for Trippier rejected, with Atletico Madrid holding out for the full €40m (£34m) stipulated in his release clause.

In better news, Sancho’s move from Borussia Dortmund looks set to be completed imminently. United announced at the start of the month that they had agreed “a deal in principle” with Dortmund over his transfer and, as things stand, he has completed his medical and is almost ready to put pen to paper.
