A man died in a shark attack after he waded into the sea to relieve himself at a Brazilian beach.
Marcelo Rocha Santos, 51, had his hand and a chunk of his leg bitten off on Saturday at Piedade Beach in Jaboatao dos Guararapes – in the northeastern part of the country.
Horrified bystanders surrounded Marcelo on the beach as he lay motionless.
One bystander filmed the body as he lay face down in the sand.
He was then rushed to the hospital in nearby city Recife where he was sadly pronounced dead.
The shark attack happened in an area where 12 previous attacks have happened, according to reports.
There was a lifeguard on duty at the time, but they were unable to stop the attack from happening.
Endriano Gomes, a mechanic, told reporters that Marcelo had been drinking with pals at the time, the Daily Mail reported.
As he entered the water at about 2pm local time as the clouds rolled in and the sea became choppy.
Gomes said: “It was a friend of mine who was in the sea with the person who was attacked. Suddenly, he saw the man struggling. There was a lot of blood in the water.”
Marcelo and Endriano’s pal were the only ones in the water at the time of the attack.
The friend managed to escape the water unharmed.
Ademir Sebastiao da Silva, the pal, said: “As the beach has no bathroom, I went into the sea to pee. I was beside him with the water up to our waists.”
He added: “It could be me. It was God’s deliverance. If I had been diving or lingered in the water, I could have been attacked.”
The victim was brought to the shore by his friends before he collapsed in the sand unconscious.
It is not known what kind of shark attacked Marcelo, but it is thought to have been either a bull shark or a tiger shark.
The beach is known to be a hotspot for sharks, according to local reports.
It is believed there were warning signs for people to not enter the water, but the lifeguard on duty reportedly didn’t stop the men because they had only gone up to their waists.
A snack seller said they have seen a number of shark attacks on the beach.
Their comments, reported in BeachGrit, were: “I’ve been working on this beach for 25 years and during this time I have witnessed a number of ferocious attacks.
“It was horrible to see. Each time it is very frightening and sad.”
In the Brazilian state where the attack happened, there have been 62 shark attacks with 25 fatalities since 1992.
