Former EastEnders star Michael Greco has shared the news that he has welcomed a newborn son, who was born with a rare birth defect and arrived six weeks early
Michael Greco has become a dad for the first time after welcoming his newborn son.
Taking to his Instagram account on Friday afternoon, the former EastEnders star shared that his son was born early and with a rare birth defect called Gastroschisis..
Michael, 51, posted a photo of his boy in his hospital crib and announced that he has been named Gianluca Greco.
He said that little Gianluca, who Michael shares with his girlfriend Helen Harris, had been born six weeks early.
Gianluca, whose name is Italian and means gift of god, is currently being treated in ICU at Great Ormond Street Hospital
“My boy,” the TV star wrote alongside three blue love heart emojis. “Gianluca Greco. Born July 1st 2021. Weighing 4.47lbs.
“The little man was born prematurely due to the fact that previous scans had failed to pick up his rare birth defect called Gastroschisis.”
Gastroschisis is when the intestines are found outside of the baby’s body, and other organs, such as the stomach and liver, can also be affected.
Michael continued: “The consultant suggested it was best for him to born early so that he could get the necessary care and attention.
“He was born at University College of London Hospital @uclh. Their staff were extremely professional and Mother and Baby could not have been in better hands.
“Dad was a ‘tad’ emotional to say the least!
“Baby has already had his first operation to replace his bowel where it should belong and is under the world’s best care of @greatormondst where he will be in ICU for a while and most probably for up to 6 weeks.
“My heart is full already and this is by far the best day of my life.
“I love you Gianluca more than I can ever imagine.”
Michael had announced that he was going to become a dad when he appeared on Loose Women back in April.
“I’m a traditionalist about colour. I know some people aren’t. I’m Italian, I’m old fashioned, I’m a traditionalist,” he said, before holding up a pair of blue socks.
He also confirmed the news on Instagram by sharing a scan photo.
“Baby Greco. First time daddy at 51! Probably the greatest post I’ve ever shared,” Michael said.
“Cant explain how emotional it was for me to be told that I am to be a father for the very first time, with my absolute soul mate.”
He continued: “I’m normally a very private person but I couldn’t help reveal my utter joy and I just want to tell the world!”
