Dieter Brummer was one of Home and Away’s most popular characters in the 1990s and bagged himself two Logie Awards and an influx of followers thanks to his role as Shane Parrish on the Aussie soap.
But the fame and success certainly didn’t go to the head of the star who tragically passed away on Monday aged just 45.
Footage from one of the star’s last ever interviews in 2018 resurfaced on Tuesday morning as Sunrise in Australia aired the clip.
In it, the interview said: ” [You were the] most popular actor at the time.”
To which Brummer coolly replied: “Most popular, yeah.”
The reporter continued: ” You were on the Sexiest Man Alive lists, and things like that. Doesn’t it go to your head?”
“No, I mean… You know, you start walking around… kissing myself,” Brummer responded in jest as he jokingly kissed his biceps.
The interview came at a time when the star had retired from acting and was instead focused on making a success of his window cleaning business.
The star was found dead at his home in north-west Sydney on Saturday and police have confirmed his death is not being treated as suspicious.
Family friend Steve Comey confirmed the sad news by posting on Facebook. He wrote “Heartbreaking news.
“We have lost a free spirit. Vale Dieter Brummer. Way too young. Way too soon. My sincerest, deepest condolences to his beautiful sister Karlene and all of Dieters family & friends. Keep flying young fella.”
His family later released a statement saying: “On behalf of my family, We post this today with a heavy heart. We lost our handsome, talented, funny, complicated and beloved Dieter on Saturday morning.
“He has left a massive hole in our lives and our world will never be the same. Our thoughts go out to all of you who knew him, loved him, or worked with him over the years.
“We appreciate you respecting our privacy at this terrible time. Should you, or anyone you know be affected by this, or indeed are feeling pain at this time, there are good people that you can talk to.”
Tributes continued to pile in on social media throughout Monday after the news broke.
The official Home and Away account posted on Instagram : “Home and Away and @channel7 are deeply saddened to hear of Dieter Brummer’s passing. Dieter was a much-loved Home and Away cast member and celebrated by Australian and international audiences for his award-winning portrayal of Shane Parrish. We send our sincere condolences to Dieter’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”
His co-star on the soap Bruce Roberts wrote on Twitter : “I’m shattered by the death of my @homeandaway brother Dieter Brummer. We spent hours together on & off set. He was caring, funny & always enthusiastic.
We had to shoot the Parrish brothers boxing. He hit me so hard I lost a contact lens. We both laughed. Vale Deets. Rest easy.”
While fellow Aussie soap Neighbours Tweeted: “Vale Dieter Brummer, joined the Neighbours alumni in 2012 as Capt. Troy Miller. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
