Justice is served! Roommates, it’s been nearly five months since ‘SoHo Karen’ aka Miya Ponsetto, was arraigned on charges for falsely accusing a Black teenager of stealing her phone in a New York City hotel last December. If you recall the incident went viral and everyone saw Miya attack the teen over a cell phone she accused him of stealing, which was later found in an Uber. In January, Miya was arrested and charged with attempted robbery, grand larceny, acting in a manner injurious to a child, and two counts of attempted assault, according to NBC News.
After a delayed court date, a judge has finally sentenced Miya for her actions. As of yesterday, Miya was officially indicted on several charges by a New York City grand jury. She was charged with two counts of unlawful imprisonment as a hate crime, aggravated harassment, and endangering the welfare of a child. She pleaded not guilty. This is obviously not the outcome Miya’s legal team expected. Paul D’Emilia, her attorney, referred to the charges as “absurd” and said the District Attorney, Cy Vance chose a “craven and opportunistic path in indicting” his client.
Attorney D’Emilia also said, “The charges alleged are a brazen and clear overreach of the intent of the statute. In sum, they are absurd and a perversion of our legal system. As truly violent criminals maraud and run rampant through New York City, this DA exhibits zero interest in law enforcement and prosecution.” He continued, “Instead, he turns his prosecutorial fury on a distraught and panicked young woman stranded without her lifeline, her phone, thousands of miles from home. Shameful.”
However, Jazz musician Keyon Harrold, who is the father of the 14-year-old, legal team felt otherwise and was happy about the charges. Yesterday he shared footage on the gram from a press conference with Rev. Al Sharpton speaking. In the 2 minute clip, Rev. Al said, “We salute [Cy Vance] his decision to show that when someone interferes with somebody based on their race or nationally they will be prosecuted in the city, and we’re glad that precedence had been established.”
